IE Versus Chrome

Neither IE nor Chrome were working well today. In IE apostrophes and other punctuation marks became little squares, while in Chrome they showed up at question marks inside diamond shapes. Secondly, when I hit enter in IE to create a new blank line, it would bounce back up to where it was. Also, IE was very slow to save.
Lately, I've had lots of problems with IE freezing up, and then having to start over as a result. That doesn't happen in Chrome. The only reason I use IE is that Chrome won't allow me to paste in content from MS Word - unless I'm pasting it into a table.
